Story of a new Selene 60 Classic Explorer Buyer and his plans to circumnavigate
Meet Brian Purdy who recently signed to become the owner of a brand new Selene 60 Classic Explorer. He wrote a post to share his thought process in deciding on buying a Selene to help him achieve his lifelong goal to circumnavigate.
We like to share the experiences and perspectives of Selene Yachts owners from time to time. Here is a post written by Brian Purdy who plans to circumnavigate with a brand new Selene 60 Classic Explorer. He just signed a contract to have this new Selene become his. Brian - thank you for sharing this and congrats on joining the Selene family!
Having grown up in a boating family, I have spent much of my life on and around the oceans. From a young age I was given the opportunity to go offshore fishing with my family, sometimes spending a few days in the Northeast Canyons. From those early experiences I developed the desire to go on long ocean journeys and maybe even circumnavigate the Earth someday.
Over the past 10 years I have been researching what it would take to follow that dream. The list of boats that can safely undertake this type of journey is small. In the end it came down to 3 different boat manufacturers, Selene being one of them.
I had been on 2 of the 3 brands but had yet to get on board a Selene. At the Stuart Tawlerfest I met Paul Cifka, Chief Marketing Officer at Selene Yachts Americas, who brought me on board the Selene 60, Coffee Break. Simply put, I was in awe of its beauty, build quality and layout. From that moment I researched its blue water capabilities. Needless to say I found it to be on par and even exceed those of the other two manufacturers. One of the other 2 brands has several circumnavigations under its belt. Despite this I opted to go with the Selene 60 Classic Explorer. This boat ticked all the boxes I was looking for in an ocean going, long range passagemaker.
The opportunity was presented to me to purchase an in-build, Selene 60 Classic Explorer. This would make it possible for me to stick to my timetable for the start of my circumnavigation and obtain a brand new vessel. So now I wait for 6048 to be finished. In the meantime I am continuing my research and preparations for my journey. My plan is to take delivery in the spring of 2025 and cruise the coast of New England with my family and learn each and every system on board. I anticipate my journey to begin in late fall of 2025, if all goes according to plan.
My intention is to take roughly 3 to 4 years to complete this journey. I will be flying home to Massachusetts several times a year to see family and friends which prolongs the trip but will be absolutely necessary as they are my foundation in life. They will also be joining me on parts of the trip when work permits.
Moving forward I would like to thank Selene Yachts for making such a stable, safe and beautiful boat. My hope is to be in constant contact with them over the course of this undertaking. Thus far Selene has been incredibly helpful in outfitting the boat with needed upgrades and systems integral to a journey such as a circumnavigation.
I look forward to sharing my experiences on this trip with all those interested. Look for a blog or vlog of various parts of the journey.
Best wishes,
Brian Purdy
