Selene Takes over Staniel Cay
Seth High of Selene Americas shares some of his experience traveling to the Bahamas for the first time to visit with Selene owners and experience the Exumas.

Following a busy and highly successful Ft. Lauderdale Trawlerfest, I joined several other members of the Selene Americas team in boarding a small plane for the Exuma chain of islands in The Bahamas. More specifically, we visited tiny Staniel Cay, where ten Selene yachts were anchored in what astronauts have called “the bluest water on earth.”
As a first-timer to the Bahamas, I was expecting warm weather, good snorkeling, and a lot of beautiful boats. However, what I wasn’t expecting was the overwhelming generosity of Selene owners and the joyous camaraderie they shared. Over the course of a short week, I literally made a dozen new friends and learned far more about the attraction of the trawler lifestyle than I could ever glean from Youtube videos.
Since returning to rainy Seattle, I’ve been strategizing how to make a visit to Staniel Cay an annual event.
Here are just a few of the many highlights from our week at Staniel Cay:

- Snorkeling at low-tide in the beautiful ‘Thunderball Grotto,’ which is named after a James Bond film that was filmed there.
- Picnicking on secluded beaches, where we gathered sand dollars and played ‘fetch’ with yacht-dog Roxie.
- Taking a happy-hour dinghy parade of the harbor, where we took photos and drone videos of Selenes in the most beautiful light imaginable.
- Enjoying a tasty pasta dinner and drinks on-board ‘Untethered,’ as well as grilling hot dogs and quesadillas on the flybridge of ‘Kallisto’ (big thank you to Richard, Kelly, Steve and Cindy for hosting!).
- Visiting the famous swimming pigs at the aptly-named ‘Pig Beach.’ Definitely best seen from a distance!
- Watching Selene’s Paul Cifka try out Richard’s electric hydrofoil (‘eFoil’) surfboard. After a few ‘face-plants’, he really caught on!
- Touring multiple Selenes and seeing how each owner made their vessels uniquely their own.
- Encountering a couple from a Nordhavn anchored nearby, and hearing them compliment all the Selenes. They looked pretty jealous at all the fun we were having.
- Joining a Selene-hosted dinner for 26 at the Staniel Cay Yacht club. The food and drink were almost as amazing as the conversation.
Whether it’s at Staniel Cay or somewhere else, it sounds like the Selene Community will be back in The Bahamas next year. And I’m already angling to join them!
